History of the city:

Naples is located halfway between two volcanic areas, the volcano Mount Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields. The city is noted for its rich history, art, culture and gastronomy and, in the modern day, the historic centre of the city is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The wonderful historical, artistic and archaeological heritage is an intrinsic part of the city. At the same time, we mustn't forget its contemporary creative nature which ensures the city always has some new project on the go, some new goal, and plenty of new ideas.

Naples is a city on the sea, a place full of light yet with dark, hidden foundations. It has a great cultural and artistic identity which is stamped on the brow of its many museums, castles, churches, squares, narrow streets and archaeological remains. It is a city in which culture, art and "light" mix with the obscure darkness of a hidden, submerged, underground world.

Population:

The metropolitan area of Naples is the second most populated in Italy and one of the largest in all of Europe with around 3.8 million people.

Basketball history of the area:

Gymnasium Napoli is leading the national ranking for participation in youth leagues, with more than 300 cards (agonistic players) and 25 teams entered in the women's youth championships. In addition it participates in the national championships for Women A2. 90% of their playersare locals, from Gymnasium Napoli youth teams. The average age is the youngest of the A2 championship.

In addition to the agonistic players, the club is involving about 400 between boys and girls enrolled in courses of minibasket and among more than 1,000 schoolchildrens and students in school projects in the province of Naples.

Recommended Sightseeing:

Visiting Naples means immersing yourself in a setting of extraordinary and complex beauty. 2,500 years of history are represented and reconstructed in the wonderful works of art and architecture which are interwoven and overlaid in today's urban fabric. They offer the visitor the chance to map out their own learning journey, deciding just how much to find out and what to visit.

Every corner of the city reveals works of incredible historic and artistic value. The city Museums house collections of works of art and archaeological remains which are amongst the finest and most significant in the world.

But there is not only ancient art. Two contemporary art galleries have recently opened up inside equally beautiful ancient buildings in the city centre (the PAN and the M.A.D.R.E.). Their numerous exhibitions of foreign and Italian artists enable the visitor to discover a newly-revived cultural vivacity.
